I will be assessing your essays on Video Nasties and 3D as a tutorial for the rest of the morning.

Essay Plan 3D

Introduction - your thoughts on the debates - is it only bad for Hollywood or does it open up new audiences for non-mainstream film?
Audience watching for free online = less preared to take risks (Die Hard 5???)
How the film industry is trying to adapt - who gains, who looses, how have they tried to tackle it?

Possible examples: Megaupload, Avatar & 3D resurgence, Digital Distribution (not on film anymore sent to screen via the internet) how many/which sites do you know to watch/stream illegally & why do you do it?

Main Body (Point > Example > Explanation > Argument (use the debates critics, directors, studios)

Para 1. Technological Context (internet, Megaupload, 3D, Digital Distribution) 3D forced on directors?

Para 2. Social Context audience watch more & potentially a greater range, improving their 'film literacy', a desire for 'better' movies, sharing indie & smaller films to a bigger audience ie: We Need to Talk About Kevin), cinema attendance vs home cinema/streaming movies

Para 3. Economic Context (cinema attendance, the Avatar effect, 3D more expensive tickets) Piracy = less risk taking & Big Dumb Movies & sequels, eating into film production profits = less reinvestment into new talent (directors or stars)

Conclusion
Debates around the threat of piracy (remember Home Video?) how will the film industry have to respond to meet audiences expectations/what do they want? Better films?

Caitlin Cherry

Textual Analysis
An considered comparative analysis of the representation of gender in these 2 complimentary selected texts. Caitlin's focus is on the feminisation of teenage males in female orineted teen dramas - her study has a sense of purpose to the study in her exploration of how they are used to explore sexuality, relationships and masuclinity. There is analysis of representation and its construction through micro elements of MES and cinematography. Caitlin also incorporates the context of the use of these characters in the rom com genre. The report has a sense of structure points mostly have examples of key scenes and purposeful analysis, it uses film terminology where appropriate. Overall a proficient  textual comparative study with some depth of analysis and insight into these Independent films challenging dominant mainstream norms. Proficient 3 (low C) /40

Planning
The location report lack any images and is not recognisable as the intended pre-production document. There is some comment on the suitability for purpose and lighting, though lacks any discussion of set design, dressing, props. There is no assessment of health & safety and directions. As a pre-production report this is recognisable attempt. The links to her study are made clear in her study on gender stereotypes and characterisation are reffered to briefly. Minimal work 2/10

Creative Artefact
The script is proficient and the dialogue expresses some recognisable links to the construction of gender, though the influence of parental role models is not apparent from her study, the analysis of the bedroom is. The casting of a very masculine, bearded, tatooed, well built and adult looking 'feminised teen' is almost the binary opposite and undermines the characterisation of the script and application of what was identified - indeed the central point and conclusion of the textual analysis. There is some attempt to experinent with feminine colours and low key lighting to explore gender and genre, though lacking skill in the application consistently. The bedroom makes little use of the opportunity to express the character through expecetations of the genre such as posters, set dressing and props. Basic lowest 3 17/30 (or Level 2?)

Evaluation
The aims of the artfect, as an exploration of the feminised teenage boy is made clear and Caitlin establishes these links by presenting her concept in relation to her conclusion that these films subvert the traditional gender stereotypes. She has excellent understanding of the conventions relevant to the construction of stereotypes and re-enforcing this through MES. There is celebration of her idea in successfully exploring her study, and detailed and honest appreciation of the weaknesses or suggestion of improvements. Overall the evaluation is thourogh and shows depth of purpose and reflection with knowledge of aims and exploration of the textual study. Excellent, High Level 4. 19/20

Charlie

Textual Analysis
Under word limit - 1000 words.

An considered comparative analysis of the representation of masculinity in these 2 complimentary selected texts. Charlie 's focus is on the subversion of male power in Trance and Starred Up, his study has a sense of purpose in exploration of masculinity in crisis. There is analysis of representation and its construction through micro elements of MES and cinematography throughout with close reference to key scenes that draw on masculinity and sexuality, violence and crime, dominant positions in society and how this is juxtaposed by women that subvert the traditional expectations. Charlie also incorporates the context of the use of these characters in the crime genre. The essay applies critical theories of Psycholanalysis confidently in its micro analysis of phallic objects to infer meaning. It has a sense of structure: there is a thesis; points mostly have examples of key scenes; there is purposeful analysis to support the thesis, a conclusion is presented that considers the contexts that have shaped the film with the Independent market and its exploration of non-mainstream ideas; and it uses film terminology where appropriate. Overall an excellent textual comparative study with depth and insight into these Independent films challenging dominant mainstream norms. Level 4 39/40

Planning
Has 3 images and some commentry on suitability for film, its exploration of the conclusion of the study and practicality. Comments on colours and lighting, as well as creative purposes. Lacks discussion of set design and props. Rather basic. Level 3 low 5/10

Creative Artefact
The script for a prequel to Trance is excellent it's creative exploration of the conclusion to the study. The scene directions and dialogue expresses clearly recognisable links to the study's analysis of the construction of masculinity in crisis and the role of the female in using her sexuality to overpower. The 9 key frames use a variety of camera positions with commentary on intended purposes linked to the conclsuoins of the study, and there is excellent attention to detail in the use of props and colour grading to produce the intended meaning. The casting is generally appropriate if a little young and unemotional, but poses and direction is clearly evident. Overall the creative exploration of the study is purposeful and well realised. Level 4 lower 20-24/30

Evaluation
The aims of the artfect, as an exploration of the masculinity is stated and Charlie renforces this across the questions. He has excellent understanding of the conventions relevant to the construction of masculinity and re-enforcing this through discussion of his MES and narrative. There is celebration of his idea in successfully exploring the study, and honest appreciation of the weaknesses or suggestion of improvements in the costume and location. Overall the evaluation is thorough and shows depth of purpose and reflection with knowledge of aims and exploration of the textual study, with a convincing level of insight to the outcomes of the tasks. Excellent, Level 4. 18/20

Ryan
Textual Analysis
A considered comparative analysis of the representation of ethnicity across the approaches of 2 different directors in these 2 complimentary selected texts focusing on the positioning of the Jews as Victims or Threats. Ryan's focus is on the comparison between Inglorious Basterds (incorrectly identified as Hollywood) and the more realistic Defiance, drawing upon both Independent films for stereotypes and realism and exploring the themes of community, power and dominance, emotional/political conflict and hatred. The study has a sense of purpose and there is analysis of representation and its construction through reference to cinematography, though this is far less detailed or consistent. The report has some sense of structure - points mostly have examples of key scenes and purposeful macro analysis that focuses on the characterisation within the narrative, and it uses film terminology where appropriate. Overall an interesting, proficient textual comparative study with some depth and insight into these Independent films challenging dominant mainstream norms. Proficient 3 (lower mid C) /40 (better slightly than Caitlins, better engagement but lacking in micro detail?)

Planning
There has been no location report submitted 0/10

Creative Artefact
This is a ambitious and creative idea incorporating the conclusions of the study in subverting the victim stereotype of the Jew in war films. Based on a reboot of Defiance, Ryan uses the subversion of Inglorious Basterds to represent th Jewish refugees are insurgence/terrorists. The script although not following the care in coventional presentation, follows convention of narrative and stylistic codes for a war-time drama, which the 9 key frames sadly do not live up to. Despite the impressive sourcing of a tank (albeit an Allied one) in the first image, the stills from the film are lacking in further props, location, casting, costume and suitable actrors (bomb, children, refugee costumes and Nazi uniforms). The poses are generally appropriate, a range of camera shots and angle are used and commented on, and there are well sourced props in the final scene. Ryan also uses a sepia tone to add mood to the lighting. Overall the creative exploration of the study is purposeful with ambitious and commendable ideas, lacking in their practical realisation on the screen. Level 3 low 19/30?

Evaluation
The aims of the artfect are commented on though written is a rather confused way. Ryan has discussed some understanding of the conventions relevant to the construction of victims, power and narrative. There is celebration of his idea in successfully exploring the study, though lacking objective appreciation of the weaknesses and its impact on the success of the creative artefact. He offers some suggestion of improvements in the costume. Overall the evaluation addresses all the question to some extent, with some discussion of purpose and reflection. Proficient, low Level 3. 11/20??

Georgina

Textual Analysis
An detailed and engaging comparative analysis of the representation of gender in these 2 selected texts. Georgina's focus is on the subversion of the traditional female stereotypes and explores the characters from Frozen and 500 Days of Summer. There is a strong sense of argument & purpose to the study in her exploration of the messages ranging from relationships and love, conventions of dependency on male characters, and the purposes of both films in widening audience vs exploring more realistic/challenging ideas. There is a sustained and developed thesis whereby Georgina infers meaning of the subversion of the Disney stereotypes Princess and Prince for the independent female and sisterly love rather than romantic, compared with the independenc of the title character in 500 days, understanding the context of representation and its construction through micro elements of MES, specifically character appearance, props and interpretation of her 'Ice' powers. The essay has a good sense of structure points flow into examples of key scenes and purposeful analysis and insightful conclusions, it is well written and uses film terminology. Overall an excellent and detailed close textual comparative study confidently written. level 4 upper 38/40 (on a par with Priscilla)

Planning
The location report contain some discussion of the intended use of the location (as a whole), though lacks the specifics in the use of each 'scene' and why (this is referred to in th evaluation however). There is a H&S appraisal, with directions to teh site and images. There is no discussion of set dressing or lighting. Level 2 Basic 4/10

Creative Artefact
A confident and clever piece. The idea for the script, a reboot of a scene from 500 days from Tom's perspective is well realised in this scene. There is strong and effective use of the location and props for creative effect detailed in the script. Georgina has added effects to create the 'memory sequence' style lighting to the images, and the key moments are captured. Unfortunately there is a lack of commentary to explain the concept or decisions taken with the camera fully. Nevertheless, this is a creative exploration of the study (though links are not explicitly stated or presented here, they are clearly done so in the evaluation), the role of the strong, capable male (handy, can cook, sexually dominant) in a contemporary yet 'fake' setting is apparent and cleverly applied. Casting and location are excellent and convincing, with detail in the use of poses and NVC. Level 4 upper 28/30

Evaluation
Comprehensive and through, Georgina clearly defines the aims and links to the study into subversion of gender relationships. She goes onto to confidently discuss the representation and genre conventions she has adhered to and explains her creative intentions. The reflection for Q4 celebrates the successes and suggest improvements with a realistic and aware objective stance on her work. Overall this convincingly demonstrates a depth of understanding of her analysis and creative exploration of the conclusions of her study. Level 4 18/20

Emily

Textual Analysis
http://ehuntleycoursework.blogspot.co.uk/2014/12/the-wolf-of-wall-street-vs-bronson.html?view=classic

This is a purposeful, insightful and detailed exploration of the theme or crime and punishment across 2 well selected comparative texts in Bronson and The Wolf of Wall Street. Emily refer to supplementary researched contexts such a director's authorship, the Independent vs Hollywood conventional narrative positioning as well as the moral message that the films aim to convey regarding criminality and the justice system. The essay focuses predominantly in the macro aspects, but infers meaning into the colour palate of the films to reenforce how this is constructed. This is a confident essay, well written with a clear structure and argument throughout, with close reference to the characterisation and narrative to explore themes. Film terminology is used appropriately. Level 4 upper/mid 36/40)

Planning
The location report is unrecognisable as it contains no images or actual report on what the locations are supposed to be used for, their suitability or dress setting/prop/lighting improvement required. Level 1 1/10

Creative Artefact
http://ehuntleycoursework.blogspot.co.uk/2015/03/9-key-frames.html
http://ehuntleycoursework.blogspot.co.uk/2015/03/reboot-script.html

This alternative ending to a reboot of Wolf of Wall Street, sets out to question the theme of criminality and punishment by synthesising the messages from the resolution of her 2 texts. Overall the 9 key frames are excellent: well selected and realised through predominantly tight shots to create the incarcerated theme. The MES and cinematography (if somewhat inconsistently) demonstrate skill in the use of colours, framing and compsition and creativity in the shot types to look convincing as skills. There is attention to detail in the use of props and costume (though no judge's wig sadly) and poses are appropriate to create meaning. There is commentary on each image to explain creative intentions related to the study's themes or crime and punishment. The script details the construction of the criminal as a sociopath and cleverly applies the end of Bronson as a punishment for the Wall Street banker. Overall excellent and creative Level 4 27/30

Evaluation
http://ehuntleycoursework.blogspot.co.uk/2015/03/coursework-evaluation.html

Emily's evaluation proficiently discusses the aims of her study and discusses implicitly how she has explored the theme of criminality and punishment by combining the 2 films studied. There is a good understanding of how she has subverted narrative conventions in her characterisation to create alignment and sympathy for the criminal protagonist. There is explaination of the preferred location that was sourced, though lacking detail as to why this will be suited to the 9 key frames and what the desired effect of her MES choices are. There is some reflection and improvement but again, lacking depth of analysis and repeating the investigation not conclusions reached. Level 3 low, 0/20

Mitch

Textual Analysis
http://mitchelcourseworkf.blogspot.co.uk/2014/12/coursework-essay.html

An interesting narrative/characterisation study of 2 similar texts, analysing the use of style and narrative. There is a sense of purpose to the study in comparing a Hollywood and Independent film, though rather confused understanding at times, 'starts to become an indie film' and 'representation of style' tends to undermine the point the candidiate is trying to make. At times, there is some close detailed micro analysis of the use of colours and lighting as well as the totem prop that is relevant to evidencing the macro readings of the study. There are some grammatical errors which denote a lack of proof reading and checking before submission. Overall, there is some confidence here at times masked by a lack of defined structure and consistency in explicitly linking the analysis back to the thesis. Level 3 proficient lower? /40

Planning
http://mitchelcourseworkf.blogspot.co.uk/2015/03/location-report.html

Mitchell has use the same images as Charlie in his location report. As this location is not actually used in the key frames (and Charlie is visible in the reflection), the work is considered to be not the students own and cannot be awarded any marks for palgiarism. 0/10

Creative Artefact
Mitch's macro analysis was based on style. The idea behind the script for a reboot of Shutter Island is the use of cinemtography to explore the 1st person perspective by retelling the story from the POV of the main character. As the commentary and the camera positions show, Mitchell has not been able to demonstrate this appropriately in his 3rd person camera positions and undermines the intention of the script. Overall this looks very basic in its execution and sourcing of MES beyond what and who was available at school. There is little progress since the draft. There is little creative realisation in the choice of location along with a lack of props and suitable costume to differentiate that it is a Psych hospital or scene decriptions in the script. The tunnel of light/POV is the most convincing image. Overall as an exploration of the style study this is shows basic application and inappropriate decision-making despite the feedback and self reflections. Level 2 low, 10/30

Evaluation
http://mitchelcourseworkf.blogspot.co.uk/2015/03/evaluation-draft.html
pretty good..

Proficient, low Level 3. 11/20

Izzy

Textual Analysis

http://izzyhedgesleighfilmcourseworkas.blogspot.co.uk/2014/11/essay-plan.html
A thorough & detailed comparative analysis of authorship study across 2 well-selected texts. Izzy identieis stylistic aspects of Tarnatino's approach, focusing particlularly on sound and violence, and the comparable themes of subverting the dominant victim/oppressor cultural stereotypes of slavery and the persecution of the Jews during WW2. Izzy argues and justifies how the controversial Independent film director sets out to challenge mainstream narratives using a consistent comparative approach drawing out depth of meaning. A clear sense of purpose & thesis to the essay with an excellent level of critical thinking skills (employing aspects of psychoanalysis) with confident understanding demonstrated through astutely selected points & examples from across all MES and cinematography aspects of film language. A flowing logical structure, confidently written with insightful personal engagement. Overall a highly excellent & confidently written comparative film analysis with a thesis, & little if any mistakes aside from absence of a conclusion. Level 4 upper 36/40

Planning
http://izzyhedgesleighfilmcourseworkas.blogspot.co.uk/2015/01/recce-report.html
http://izzyhedgesleighfilmcourseworkas.blogspot.co.uk/2015/01/prop-report.html
The location report demonstrates purposeful creative decision making that considers the suitability of the location in terms of the stylistic convention required by her study. The location itself is highly suitable and Izzy has been resourceful. The report discusses the set dressing and lighting in fulfilling the intended function and meaning of the location. She also suggests a back up. *Izzy has gine beyond one planning document to consider other MES aspects such as props and costumes, with considerable detail. Given the detail in the justification and evidence of planning presented, this well deserving of top marks at AS. 10/10

Creative Artefact
http://izzyhedgesleighfilmcourseworkas.blogspot.co.uk/2015/02/9-keyframes.html
Izzy has produced a clever interpretation of the conclusion of her textual analysis of Tarantino's authorship through the subversion of the victim/oppressor stereotype moving from Jewish ethnicity in I.G. and Django to gender in the 1960s. The script contains suitably Tarnatino-esque stylised graphic violence in the pigniant moment where she castrates her husband in this interesting and confident feminist statement. The key frames demonstrate attention to detail in the sourcing and selection of costume to create meaning, with the 1960s bluecollar worker overalls and housewife being constructed appropriately and suitable casting to play the age range and gender stereotypes of the characters. Izzy has annotated each still to explain the links to her study and has further justified her decisions throughout with comparison to stills from the films she studied - using intertextual references to immitate framing and stylistic aspects from his films. A clever, bold and insightful creative exploration of her study, excellently realised and made her own. Izzy has also developed her key frames into an animatic and added sound and dialogue. Level 4 29/30

Evaluation
This is comprehensive and through, Izzy clearly defines the aims and identifies the links to the authorship study on Tarantino. She goes onto to confidently analyse and explain her decisions to explore the conventions of his style and how she constructs these themes through her creative decisions both in narrative, sound and MES - in great detail and using sophisticated film terminology and employing critical theory. There is reflection, celebrating the considerable successes throughout and suggest improvements with a objective stance on her work. Overall this convincingly demonstrates a great depth of understanding of her analysis and creative exploration of the conclusions of her study. Excellent across all responses. Level 4 19/20

Will

Textual Analysis
http://filmstudiescw.blogspot.co.uk/2015/03/essay.html
An confident representation of masculinity study of 2 Westerns, analysing the messages of the influence of father role-models, leadership and gender as a performance. There is a strong sense of purpose to the study and the examples are related to back up points of comparison across the 2 texts. At times, there is some close micro analysis of the meaning of the loss of limbs, animals and guns, as well as the characterisation and plot and Will applies some critical theory identifying aspects of psychoanalysis to read deeper meaning into the masculinity of the Western. Overall, there is some confidence here at times masked by a lack of defined structure and regular close analysis of aspects that could have been addressed in the macro, or appreciation of the differences between Hollywood representations of Indie and the messages therein. Level 3 proficient higher? /40

Planning
Will has not submitted a location report 0/10

Creative Artefact
http://filmstudiescw.blogspot.co.uk/2015/03/script.html
http://filmstudiescw.blogspot.co.uk/2015/02/9-key-frames_5.html
There are clear links to the representation of masculinity through the violence and language. Though the script is not laid out correctly, and lacks the detail required to demonstrate the links to the western genre. There is supporting analysis of the 9 key frames to justify decisions - though again the links to the western genre are not obvious (meadow/field as a 'classic western', men in suits, no horses?) beyond the gun props sourced. Whilst the aims of the evaluation state this is a 'modern version of a western' it is not clear how these mise-en-scene decisions have been thought out to establish what 'the west' is. A sepia effect has been overlayed. Overall some creativity in the cinematography but heavily lacking in the location (as reenforced by the absence of planning documentation), costumes and mise-en-scene. Level 2 Higher Basic 12/30

The aims state the implicit links to the study, though most of the conventions of masculinity discussed address (in some detail) the use of cinematography which is not a focus of the study. The significance of the field has no grouding in the study and the genre conventions - which would be a focus of an analysis of westerns - are not discussed beyond the revolver. The location report evaluation identifies the gap in understanding of the selection of the school 'I wanted to use a location which was conventional to the classic western'. The reflective evaluation celebrates the successes but fails to recognise the lack of continuity to imply this is a 'contemporary western' or that this is not recognisable visually as this genre.
Level 2 higher 10/20

Kieran

Textual Analysis
A thorough & detailed style bc narrative analysis across 2 comparable texts. Kieran identifies stylistic aspects of both films, explaining their function in relationship to complimenting or overshadowing the narrative, focusing particlularly on Neo Noir lighting and charactersation and hyper-real CGI and intertextual video game references. Kieran argues that in both the style is more prevalant in communicating the visual style as an art form secondary to the narrative itself, and justifies how these Independent films use style to create narrative meaning. Kieran consistenetly and fully integrates micro analysis to suport his macro points, with confident exploration of film language. A clear sense of purpose & thesis to the essay with an excellent level of critical thinking skills (employing aspects of postmodernism and applying the generic conventions of Neo Noir). A flowing logical structure, confidently written with insightful personal engagement. Overall a highly excellent film analysis with a thesis with little if any mistakes. Level 4 upper 39/40

Planning
Kieran has not submitted his location report. A treatment and proposal is evident however. 2/10

Creative Artefact
Kieran has not submitted his 9 key frames, a script is completed. Level 1 5/30

Evaluation
Kieran has not submitted an evaluation

Louie
Louie has not submitted any of his coursework beyond an incomplete 800 word draft in November of his Textual Analysis. What is contained moves from representation to narrative structure and has some points of comparison between the film. It contains some close analysis of the mise-en-scene to analyse the macro aspects of characterisation that implicitly link to his thesis. Basic Level 2, /40

-Government Censorship & Police Raids on VHS dealers
-Riots and civil unrest, unemployment and recession

- Moral Campaign against video nasties; Mary Whitehouse (NVLA), Margaret Thatcher, the media and the BBFC.
-The above mentioned scapegoated the video nasties for immoral behaviour which led to a moral panic
-Cinema attendance declined massively due to the rise of VHS
-Video Nasties like Evil Dead, I Spit On Your Grave and Driller Killer were realistic because they were low budget
-Video Nasties were niche films and really popular with teenagers due to controversy

-Video Nasties were exploited to explain responsibility for moral decline in society
-Watching video nasties helps put it in context of narrative, the campaigners did not actually watch them
-Video Nasties were made for distribution only via home-video
